Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food Dehydrator Review

I had been researching dehydrators for months and finally decided on this one. I am happy I did. I have dried veggies, fruits, made jerky and fruit leathers so far. It is easy to use, has great recipes and works well. It is nice to be able to give the kids snacks that are not full of sugars and things no one can pronounce. I only wish it had a timer. I will probably use a regular timer and plug it into that. Pros: *fan not in bottom of unit - allows for more uniform drying *temperature control *size - fits nicely on a kitchen counter *availability of accessories *ease of use Cons: *no timer *no on/off switch - you have to unplug the unit to turn it off

Product Description:
Dry fruit, vegetables, and jerky in hours instead of days with this 700-watt food dehydrator. The unit's patented Converga-Flow drying system forces air down the exterior pressurized chamber, then horizontally across each individual tray, converging in the center, for fast, even, and nutritious drying. Flavors don't mix, and there's no need to rotate the trays. Its top-mounted fan eliminates the worry of liquids dripping into the heater chamber, and an opaque Vita-Save exterior helps block harmful lights in order to retain more of the food's nutrients and vitamins during the drying process. The unit's adjustable thermostat ranges from 95 to 160 degrees F, providing the flexibility needed to ensure excellent results. Five trays come included, but the unit can be expanded to up to 12 trays (additional trays sold separately) for drying larger quantities at one time. Accessories include two fruit roll sheets, perfect for drying semi-liquids like soups, sauces, and fruit rolls; two Clean-A-Screen flexible screens, which allow for easy drying of small items such as herbs, spices, and potpourri; and three original jerky spice packets for making jerky. A 52-page recipe and instruction book also comes included. With a sleek, contemporary design, the food dehydrator measures approximately 13 by 13 by 10 inches.

Oxo Good Grips Bottle Brush Review

Oxo Good Grips Bottle Brush

I bought one of these for my husband who has lots of water bottles (some with necks only about an inch wide!)that he uses while at work on construction jobs. This brush is the ONLY one we found that actually will clean those bottles. The key is, the skinny part of the handle BENDS so you can reach the unreachable parts of the bottles. I recommend this brush to anyone who uses water bottles on a daily basis.

KitchenAid SSA Sausage Stuffer Kit Attachment for Food Grinder Review

KitchenAid SSA Sausage Stuffer Kit Attachment for Food Grinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started learning about sausage stuffing in order to make a good andouille for jambalaya, gumbo, etc. Most decent equipment out there will run anywhere from $[...]-$[...] for a decent stuffer. Double that total and you can get a grinder as well. If you're going to make consistently large batches (25 lbs or more at a time) then you're probably going to want to invest in those. However, if you're just learning and starting out and already have a KitchenAid and the associated grinder, then the stuffing attachment for less than $10 is a no-brainer. I've used it a couple of times now and I can say that it makes high-quality sausage without a problem. I have noted a couple of negative reviews for this product. Not knowing the specifics of how those people used the product, I can note some things I learned on my own, and from a site. That is an excellent site about andouille and sausage stuffing in general (especially with a KitchenAid). 1. When grinding, make sure the blade is in. I forgot to do this on my first batch and it turned the meat into paste and was impossible to get the grinder to work properly (which is why they include it). 2. Make sure you keep the meat very cold. I haven't had to cool the attachments, although that might help, especially when the meat isn't the coldest. 3. Use the coarse grind plate for sausage. You can the fine grind plate (for hot dogs for example), but I would recommend just using the coarse plate and running the meat through multiple times for a finer grind on your sausage. The grinder can get some tissue wrapped around the feeder and it could require some disassembly and cleaning (might take 3-5 minutes), especially with the fine grind plate. After the first grind, the mixture moves through the grinder pretty quickly anyway. 4. Make sure the screw cap is tight. Meat can escape through the cap if you're not careful. It shouldn't in most cases though. If it is, this is a sign something else is probably wrong. 5. I bought the KitchenAid FT Food Tray Attachment for Stand Mixers as well. It's fairly handy for larger batches and I recommend it, but it's not necessary. I ground 15 lbs the other night and it was helpful in holding the larger amounts. 6. You'll see this other places, but I'll reiterate that natural casings are worth the extra (minimal) effort. There's not much to it once you've used them. Collagen is ok and are less likely to break, but natural aren't as fragile as you might think and they look and taste way better. I was a little leery of natural and bought collagen initially, but haven't used them since my first batch. I don't think I'll go back if I don't have to. I've stuffed andouille and Italian sausage both with the larger of the two stuffer attachments. If I make some breakfast sausage, I imagine the smaller one will come in handy. If you're like me and you've gotten to this point, next on your list will probably be a smoker. I haven't taken that plunge yet, but it's coming soon. Good luck and happy stuffing!

Many people prefer to make their own sausages because this allows them to monitor the ingredients for quality and to use more exotic flavorings such as sun-dried tomatoes or roasted peppers.

Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry Iron with Stainless-Steel Soleplate Review

Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry Iron with Stainless-Steel Soleplate
Average Reviews:

Very nice iron - especially for the price I paid on Amazon.com. Has a removable water tank which makes it easier to fill without making a mess. Nice, very polished stainless steel soleplate which glides easily over clothes. Has an anti-calcium system to prevent buildup caused by hard water which can block the steam system. Another nice feature is the power cord retractor - which works very well.

Product Description:
Steam out wrinkles quickly and easily with this 1200-watt iron. The unit's stainless-steel curved nonstick soleplate provides smooth, gentle gliding, and its temperature ranges from 176 to 392 degrees F to accommodate a variety of different fabrics. Turn the temperature dial to choose from five fabric settings; a handy reference chart for fabrics and temperatures comes printed on the iron's base. For added convenience, use the iron's push-button spray mist to direct extra moisture where it's needed most or the jet-of-steam function for a powerful burst of steam to blast away stubborn wrinkles--or to clean the steam vents after ironing. Its adjustable steam allows for selecting the right amount of steam for the job--regular steam for heavier material or light steam for quick touch-ups; or choose the "dry" setting for no steam output. With the push of a button, the iron can also be used to vertically steam drapery, hanging garments, and other household items. To ensure safety, its electronic sensor automatically shuts off the iron after 10 minutes if left upright on its heel rest or after 60 seconds if left unmoved on its soleplate or if tipped over on its side. Other highlights include a see-through 5-2/5-ounce water tank that detaches for easy filling, an anti-calcium system that keeps vents free from build-up, and a push-button retractable cord reel for tidy cord storage. With its Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, the iron measures 10-2/5 by 4-2/7 by 5-2/7 inches.

Lasko 755320 Ceramic Tower Heater with Digital Display and Remote Control Review

Lasko 755320 Ceramic Tower Heater with Digital Display and Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great heater! We use it to heat the living area of our RV. The living area is approximately 26' x 10' with normal height ceilings. We've tried a few different compact room heaters, but they were too small to heat the area and also way too noisy. We've had the heater about 4 months now. Since we are staying in cooler climates, we've used it almost every night (overnight). The best features about this heater are: - It's QUIET!!! Really!! We have tried many heaters in our RV and house over the years and they tend to be so noisy. The model we tried before purchasing the Lasko was so noisy we had to crank the tv volume up to hear over it. This Lasko seems to be about as quiet as a fan could be. - It has an automatic thermostat you can set. This model has a high/low and auto setting. The high/low settings are not thermostat controlled. You simply choose hotter or less hot air. :) The auto setting allows you to set the thermostat to the temperature you desire. It seems reasonably "accurate". That is, the temperature it displays is within 3-4 degrees of the other thermometers I have around the room. Once you set the thermostat, the heater cycles on/off, just like you would expect. This is a great way to keep the room at your target temperature. We use this mode every night. - It oscillates. This sounds like a silly feature to list, but it makes a big difference in heating up a room. The previous heaters we've had did not oscillate. Therefore, the area directly in front of the heater was warmed, but the rest of the room was not. The oscillation really helps get the heat moved around the room so that you are not creating hot and cold spots. We always turn on the oscillation to heat the room. I am sold on that feature and would not buy another heater in the future unless it oscillated. - It has a remote control. The only thing that would make it better is if you could see the settings on the remote instead of having to look at the top of the heater. But, if they did that, the cost would go up. So, I'm happy with this remote given the price of the unit. There are a couple of negatives about this heater: - To me, it is annoying that it beeps for every setting you change. This may be a problem if you plan to use it in your bedroom and change settings while someone is asleep. The beeping is really apparent when you want to change the thermostat. When you unplug the heater, it resets itself to 75 degrees. So, if you then want to set it to 60 degrees, you are going to hear 15 LOUD beeps. Turn it on - beep. Choose oscillate - beep. Change to auto setting - beep. Decide to up the temperature by 3 degrees during the night - beep, beep, beep... and your partner is now awake! You get the idea. :) I assume Lasko designed the beep so that you would know you changed something while clicking the remote control. But, it's so loud they should either make it softer or give you an option to turn it off. - There is no "fan only" setting. It seems like most heaters I've purchased in the past have a fan only setting. I'm not sure why this one does not. Since you have the big unit sitting there in your room, it would be nice if it could be used to circulate air during the day when it's warmer, and then heat at night once the temps have dropped. Since we are using this heater in our RV, it's more noticeable to me since we need to have space for the both the heater and a fan. Oh well. Overall, we love this heater and would buy it again. I rate it at 4.5 stars. (PS - we bought it at a local store, not via Amazon, so I can't comment on shipping).UPDATE 1/18/2010: We've had this heater about 1 year now and it's still going strong. One thing I've noticed is that it will build up lint (Ummm... ok, cat & dog fur...). I wish there was a filter we could access and clean more directly. Oh well, other than that this heater is still doing great.

RT600C Super-fast Water-resistant Digital Pocket Thermometer Review

RT600C Super-fast Water-resistant Digital Pocket Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own 4 Thermoworks products, and they've all been top-notch. This is only a few dollars more than their "slow" reading pen, and it's more than worth the extra cost. And it's only a couple of seconds slower than Thermowork's top-end model, which costs twice as much. The probe is longer than most, which keeps your hands further away from hot foods and grease splatters. The probe tapers to a very thin, sharp point, which should easily pierce any meat. I checked the accuracy using boiling water, and it read right on the money. This is a professional-grade unit, and is intended to be used for long stretches at a time, so it doesn't auto-shut-off. If that's a big issue for you, look elsewhere. But even if you accidentally leave it on, it can run continuously for over half a year on a single A76 battery. The display is fairly large, but there are larger displays. But a bigger display make the unit more top-heavy. This seems to be a nice compromise. Unless you have severe site problems, you should have no problem reading it.

Product Description:
We've added another version of our popular RT600 series. The RT600C from ThermoWorks offers a Super-Fast, reduced-tip probe for 5- to 6-second readings. The sealed body of the thermometer features rubberized switch panels, a robust LCD window, and it withstands temperatures to 190°F so you can record peak temperatures in commercial dishwashers using the Min/Max feature. There are many digital pocket thermometers on the market that are similar in shape and cost. BUT, none are this fast! Most of the others have probes that are too short. Some have welded or brazed joints in the shaft which can shelter microbes or are easy to break. And, the body of the RT600C is just plain tougher than the others. Speed, reliability and affordability. The RT600C is a better choice for lab work, food processing and high- volume food service.

Cuisinart MCP-12 MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set Review

Cuisinart MCP-12 MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the set you want. Why? Here are some reasons. Some are about Stainless steel cookware in general, but all apply specifically to this set. o Stainless steel is sanitary. You can get them perfectly clean very easily. (Commercial food processors are often required to use stainless steel for nearly everything that comes in contact with food.) o Stainless steel cleans up nearly as easily non-stick cookware. You do clean it differently, however. o These pans have an aluminum core wrapped on both sides by stainless steel. Stainless steel does not transmit heat quickly but aluminum does. Aluminum is soft and dents easily, stainless steel is hard and strong. This means you get the toughness of stainless steel with the even heat distribution of aluminum. o Even heat distribution and rapid heating allows you use lower heat setting thus saving energy and reducing the chance of burning food. o Handles stay fairly cool, better than most cookware I have used. o Dishwasher safe, unlike most non-stick pans. o Oven-safe. Like to grill that steak then broil it to get it tender? Or you need to bake that stuffing then keep it warm? Use one pan! o Pans are a little bottom heavy. They will not tip as easily as lighter weight pans, even empty or with a large spoon hanging off one side. o Pans are well balanced and not too heavy. Want to flip those pancakes or toss those grilled onions, these pans give you fine control. They have been excellent for every use I have put them through. o Lids are interchangeable and fit well! The lids even fit the skillets which is great if you are making grilled sandwiches. Note that lids may seem loose, especially when pans are cold. Remember that as pans get hot, their shape can change. Also, you do not want a perfect seal as you can make a bomb just by boiling water. Thus the lids need a little room to vent steam as well as accommodate changes in the shape of the pan. If you have a gas range, consider using a flame deflector. This is good advice for ANY type of cookware. Personally, I have owned the high quality non-stick stuff as well as stainless steel cookware. The non-stick stuff is quite over-rated, it does not clean up any more easily than the stainless pans. None of my non-stick Analon and Caliphon stuff has lasted more than six or eight years. The only stainless steel pot I ever had I got from my mother back in 1979. It is in great condition and looks like I bought it last month. Unfortunately, some researches recently have linked some of the binding agents in non-stick cookware to cancer, so perhaps, to be safe, avoid the complex chemical treatments of the non-stick stuff and go for simple stainless steel.
